website builder programmes

Options
Hi,

First post. I want to build a website for a small business. Nothng fancy just to have a web presence if a potential checks it out.

Can anyone advise on user friendly packages to help me design a site myself.

Thanks for any advice offered.

  • Dreamweaver is probably the market leader, but I'll assume you're looking for a cheap/free option?

If so, Kompozer is probably the best-supported option - loads of templates and help online.

One word of warning - commercially, a bad website is worse than no website. Don't think "that'll do..." and stick up any old rubbish. Bounce it off some people who use the net and know a rubbish site when they see one.

  • Thanks,

A few people mentioned dreamweaver to me.

Dreamweaver is one of the leading packages for professional designers however this only deals with the coding side of things and so you would also need a graphics package to go with it. The natural bedfellow of Dreamweaver is Photoshop given both are Adobe products and now tend to be sold now as packages. That said, for the package you are probably looking at the best part of £500

If your wanting a straight forward site then you may be better off just using a CMS system, such as WordPress and then buying/ designing a theme for it. This will cost less than software will and will help enforce some best practice on you which you may miss if your not a professional web designer.
