Mado I carfully twist the runner and peg it in the hanging basket then lift it in about a week when its rooted, cut and put into a little 4 inch pot to root further

Elsin you need to find some way to support the strawb, any way you could arrange it so the fruit stem grows around the pot rather than over.

Oh and i'm not a strawberry fan either, kids and hubby are so we have around 80 plants between the allotment and my garden. Mara des bois (sp?) is a fav in this house.

I have tried 2 ways of propogating from runners. I use hairgrips to fix down the runners into yoghurt tubs or old plastic punnets.I have also popped the runners into a bowl of water and find that they start to root this way too Have layed straw under the straws this year to stop them laying on the soil. Have caged the ones in boxes and netted all the others. Nothing better than growing your own strawberries :o

Try cutting the runners off the mother plant so that the energy goes into producing the berries only.

Argh... I also have an issue with what to do with runners as my strawberries are in a hanging basket...
Can I cut them off and place them in a pot?

Yes you can. Conventional wisdom has it that you must place them in a pot with the `umbelical cord` still attached.

All I do is snip off any likely candidates and plant them.

In my experience there has never been a problem. I have planted strawbs from runners and moved strawbs in all seasons - including february - and it worked - except once.

when I tried to move some in early summer, they all died

    the lesson is.

strawbs dont mind at all being moved, when they are dormant. do not move early spring summer, they are not dormant then. put to root runners late summer.

If runners is all youre getting it suggests two things

    1. Not enough sunlight
    2. Not enough nutrients

    1 or both together

Like a lot of plants, strawbs react to what they feel as a sudden drought (of nutrients, sun, water) by what gardeners call `going to seed`, its a plants mad rush to spread its seeds because its genes tell it, it is a crisis and it better hurry up and spread its genes before its too late.

tell me more please, how much light do your strawbs get, how old are they, what do you feed them with, and what variety are they?

please do not be intimidated by my questions, the more I know, the better I can answer.

Actually, I am trying a new self devised method:D
I placed a section of egg box filled with compost under each of the runners nodes and attached them using masking tape to the runner.
I will report in a few weeks to say if they have rooted.

It is nice to see the value of your house going up'' Why ?
Unless you are planning to sell up and not live anywhere, I can;t see the advantage.
If you are planning to upsize the new house will cost more.
If you are planning to downsize your new house will cost more than it should
If you are trying to buy your first house its almost impossible.
