Bank have lost cheque

Surely they should have better security in place to stop such valuable items going missingand should have some sort of liability insurance of this is the case. It's similar to sending a valuable package with RM, if you were intelligent, you'd send it recorded signed for and insure it for the correct amount.
The bank have messed up. Any reasonable costs that are incurred in obtaining a replacement cheque are their liability. And loss of interest on that money while it's been missing is their liability. You can reasonably argue that there should be an additional payment to cover the stress etc of the situation.
Work out what the financial implications of getting a replacement are. Make it clear you've complained. Ask them, by all means, to credit your account with the value of the missing cheque - I don't think they will and I think and attempt to pursue this angle will end up with the FOS - and that will take longer than getting a replacement from the drawer.Unhelpful0 -
Interesting thread.
I must confess that if someone had told me my cheque to them had been lost by them...I'd stop it and write another one ASAP.
If however they had paid it in and got the stamp/receipt in their book/counterfoil to say they had....but it had not appeared in their account....then I'd say no way do you get another one from me until the bank writes an indemnity to me.0 -

A cheque can be stopped and replaced. Why would you insure for something like that?
You miss the point. A cheque is a piece of paper with an instruction to take money out of a bank account. It is completely replaceable without significant cost.

It was very accurate and very helpful. It wasn't what you wanted to hear. It's a pain. But your response to that poster was uncalled for. Be frustrated with Santander by all means. But not those providing you with good information on here. It's not their fault, is it?
Although I understand what you are saying, obviously, in some cases, cheques cannot easily be replaced.
Although, as you say, it's just a piece of paper, that piece of paper was worth a few thousand pounds to my dad. Now that Santander have lost that cheque, my dad will now have to survive without that money, and be subject to a fair amount of stress and trouble to have that cheque re-issued.0 -
Can you possibly explain why the cheque cannot be replaced for 3 months.
It is this part which irritates me - has the drawer gone ga ga , gone to Outer Mongolia - taken a trip to the moon or what?0 -

The individual who my dad did the work for is on his holiday, and won't be back until the final week of August, at which point my dad will have to contact him, and the gentleman will then have to re-issue the cheque through his company. The finance department don't have permission to re-issue the cheque without the boss's say so, who, as previously stated, is abroad. The guy left in charge also won't authorise this without permission.0 -
Those more suspicious than myself would be thinking that the cheque bounced. I could say more but I'm off on holiday.

Well as the guy who wrote it is a multi-millionaire, I highly doubt it. My father has worked for him many times over the years, and has had no issue with anything like this before. However, his account was A&L back then. At no point has this been suggested to my dad either. In fact, they are now, yet again, claiming it is because his account is dormant. However, they still have no clue where the cheque is.0

Another good reason to phase out cheques tbh :P0

No, he doesn't
After e-mailing the CEO of Santander, he received a reply from the CEO's PA saying that they had lost the cheque.
He then re-emailed the CEO marked private & confidential. The CEO has now sorted it, traced the cheque, and has placed it in my Dad's Santander savings account.
Problem solved.0
