my whole village has been without power since friday night, they did put in a generator from about 9pm last night but it blew up this morning. they have been working at it all day and they now have 4 generators. problem is I have 2 freezers full of defrosting food, we did ask about some compensation but electricity company say its up to our household insurance nothing to do with them is this correct?

After 18 hours continuous disconnection you can claim compensation. This is £50 for domestic customers and £100 for non-domestic customers, plus £25 for each further 12 hours. However they are not liable for any consequential loss-so you would have to look to your household contents insurance for that.
However there are certain exclusions (such as malicious damage) which may apply. What is the cause of the power cut?
You billing company is not responsible, it's the DNO. Who is yours?

As long as you haven't been opening the door, the food would be fine.
A fully laden freezer will not defrost in 24 hours with the door closed.
Whilst you appear to have had a couple of interuptions, the 12 hours (approx) that the power was on inbetween would have cooled down the freezer again so good for another 24 hours at least ... although it seems the second interruption was shorter and you now have power again :)
