Somebody mentioned an elect tariff whereby you read your meter monthly, submit the reading, and then you pay for that month. Can anybody tell me more about this? I need one where you pay cash , wont have DDs, I hate them, and this sounded perfect.

A prepayment meter maybe? Most suppliers standard tariffs will accept monthly meter readings. Some will issue bills monthly "on request". Some will give you a payment card to make cash payments monthly if they don't issue a bill monthly.

:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p

The only one I am aware of is British Gas Energysmart.

However it is payed for by Variable Direct Debit.

And by refusing to use fixed monthly DD's you screen out almost all the cheaper tariffs.

This is untrue. Energysmart can be used on a variable dd with all credit meter tariffs apart from Websaver.

    Hi there,

Energysmart can indeed be used with all tariffs apart from the websaver. The best discount you can get with energysmart is the OnlineSaver 4, which gives a minimum of 4% discount on tier two prices and comes with no cancellation fee.

This discount, along with the behavioural discounts available through means of seeing how much you use every month and using the free energy monitor that comes with energysmart, can actually give better savings than just being on the websaver with cheaper unit prices.

Whereas setting up a variable monthly direct debit to collect the amount you are billed does give you extra discounts, you are able to pay via debit/credit card online or over the phone as well.

    I hope this helps?

Don't understand that...what the utter hell is a "behavioural discount" ? Does that translate as "use less and it costs less" ? :rotfl:
I wont use DDs I hate them, I like cash, know exactly where I am. We did ask SP about changing over to a DD once - because people on here told me it would be cheaper - and it worked out more than I pay already so not sure how the hell that's supposed to be cheaper.
If there's nowhere that lets you read your own meter once a month/ submit the reading/ then pay the bill, it wont matter. I just stay where I am. Thanks all for helping :D

HappymJ sorry missed you out - cant use prepayment as we live remote and its too much hassle sometimes in bad weather to struggle out to a shop to put more on the card or whatever.

I think BG have a solution to that too :)
A system where you can load the card at home. Give them a call and ask about it :)
