where to buy / get best deal Microsoft Office 2010

time to move into 21st century !

I've got windows xp and microsoft office 2003 on everything but have decided i need to replace my desktop pc .. and laptop ,and netbook , so will get with Windows 7 and will need to update to microsoft office 2010 .

Where is the best deal for Office .. suitable to put on 3 machines ?

need best deal based on both ... buying as "student" .. ( in case i can find one nearby to buy for me ? ) .. and as normal buyer.

Then .. will i ? ...... how do I ? ... "convert" all my Word & Excel files to work on 2010 ?

As always , thanks in advance , knowing the superb help i always get from fellow MSE 'ers !!

Why do you need to replace all those PCs? And why do you need Office 2010?

If you already have a copy of Office 2003, just make sure you have the 2007 compatibility pack installed and you should be able to view all standard documents. 2007 is generally standard due to compatibility, but if you encounter documents from 2010 in your course then you can use the free Microsoft Word Viewer. Some people are annoying, and just assume that everyone else has the latest version of Office and send text files and documents in unnecessary formats.

Still, if you must have Office 2010, then you can have it for £40ish from http://www.software4students.co.uk/

With a bit of cleaning, your current PCs can still serve you well. There's already a guide for this: https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/2436849
  • certainly desktop & laptop extremely old and poor spec !. , the samsung netbook only couple of years old ... remember at the time they were xp so that was fine .. assuming now they have windows 7 and i'd need to change to that ( or do i just buy / update software rather than machine ? )

Didn't know about office 2007 ... just presumed that 2010 ,being the latest ,was the way to go.

As always , here to learn !

It is - if only because it is quite difficult (and pointless) to source a copy of Office 2007.

It is always possible, for no charge, to download a copy of LibreOffice, which does a pretty good job of being fairly compatible with Office. But if you need to be totally compatible with Office, go for RussJK's suggestion.

And you are probably wasting your time and money updating ancient PCs or laptops to Windows 7 - they won't be powerful enough to give you a "rewarding user experience"......

In my opinion, if your current version of office 2003 does every thing you need it to then I can't see the point if changing - especially if you use it a lot and have got used to it. The new user interface of 2007 and 2010 are completely different and I believe less intuitive if you're used to 2003.

I use 2003 at work and had 2007 at home. However, we're moving over to 2010 at work shortly and we have a very good deal in getting 2010 for personal use so I've just upgraded to 2010 at home (this weekend). They have made some welcome improvements in the user interface (can now be customised) so it looks more promising. So, if you REALLY want to change from 2003, I would definely avoid 2007 and go straight for 2010.
Never let it get you down... unless it really is as bad as it seems.
  • wasn't really "wanting" to move from 2003 but thought i'd read somewhere it didn't work with windows 7 hence why assumed i'd have to have 2010

The desktop & laptop are very old specs .. the netbook is samsung nc20 which came with XP and i put the office 2003 on to it.

On Office .....i just use simple Word docs and straightforward large spreadsheets. I'd want to have Office .. not libre etc

Software4students sell it for £37.89 and this can be installed on 2 machines. Great if you area student. Also most comoanies will sell it cheap at the same time as buying a new machine.

    Works fine here, Win7 64bit/Office 2003 Professional.
    Move along, nothing to see.
