Call me Mr Grumpy, but isn't it a bit late in the year to be buying plugs? I keep seeing 'special offers' for them and can't help wondering if it's because the growers have been stuck with a load they can't sell due to this awful summer.
Either way, we are almost into July and expecting a decent size plant from a plug for this summer strikes me as a shade optimistic.
I just mention this as a word of caution for newcomers - not to criticise the OP.0 -

Its a fair point but you can overwinter them so still a good deal and you should still get some growth this season from them0 -

last year i bought gerbera plugs at what i thought was a bargain price... by late autumn they were barely a few inches tall and i kept them in the greenhouse over winter... needless to say... they contribured to the compost by about january...
some plugs are 'a bargain' becuase any money is better than none...
that said, good luck to anyone buying them (and i daresay i'll be mug enough to buy more this year!)0 -
I bought a mixed set of Fuchsia plugs from Thomson and Morgan in May. They didn't arrive until mid-June and they looked half dead in the box as they'd dried out.
I watered them and managed to save half and potted them into flower pouches with some other plugs (bought elsewhere). Even though the other plugs have grown, all but one of the fuchsia's has died.
I also bought some begonia tubers that have done nothing, and ordered a summer basket collection which never arrived and then I was told it would be sent in April 2012! I told them to cancel it as I wanted stuff for this summer, not next!
Won't be buying from them again and will stick to buying local so I can see what I'm getting before I buy. Here I go again on my own....0
