Stand alone media player

Hi
Whilst browsing I came across a Sumicon - I think - media player. Very cheap but it would seem not that wonderful. So I am looking for a stand alone media player HDD based that may also accept SD XD cards. It is my intention to use the media player with a 15" LCD monitor to display photos and possibly video.

Any thoughts or recomendations?

Phil

The Freecome player aka M35 seems to get good reviews, http://svp.co.uk/products-solo.php?pid=995 perhaps due to its user modifiable firmware http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/mg-35_firmware_mods/

There's also the Sumvision Aqua http://svp.co.uk/products-solo.php?pid=1627

Having been through this and trying to find the 'best' I ended up choosing the cheapest, my thoughts being that if it doesn't work. I'll send it back and upgrade. I'm sat here presently waiting the arrival of the sumvision as it happens :)

    HTH in some way.
It could have been worse. At least source code's not combustible, or you can bet somebody at McAfee would have lit it.

I have the Sumvision Aqua with a 160GB HD, works fine with DVD generated file but currently waiting a response from SVP over some incompatibilities with MPEG2 generate using MPEG Streamclip. Apart fro that have been happy with it (chose it over the Freecom as you can choos ethe HD drive size and switch disks easier without affecting warranty)
  • this sounds exactly what I am looking for :D

If it plays .avi files then its definitely what I am looking for.

Looks like the first post-christmas purchase I think :D
I have no more money to give - all you companies out there - do your worst - I give in!! :(

teh Sumvision has played all the divx I've thrown at it, plus JPEGs off camera memory cards etc. Apart from the mpeg issue it seems fine

The freecom is available without a hard drive as well - http://www.pixmania.co.uk/uk/uk/159663/art/freecom/network-mediaplayer-3-5-k.html

well yes that's true, but it's £60 extra, thats the price of a 200GB+ HD for the Sumvision, this is MSE

But you aren't comparing like with like - yes they are both media players but additional functionality and the availabilty of modified firmware makes the Freecom a much better option.

The killer feature ( and worth the money IMHO) of the Freecom is the ability to be networked
