Cuprinol or Ronseal??

Which is best? We all have a favourite, dulux or crown, lennon or mccartney, so which is best - ronseal or cuprinol?

I've got some timber decking that needs re-sealing/re-staining and with so many products on the market, I don't know which to go for. The weather has removed most of the previous stain but it still remains in some places so I'm reluctant to go for an oil as I assume this gives a more translucent coverage.

I'm not too bothered about longevity - as I don't intend to be living at the property after the winter, so as long as it looks good NOW, then that's fine by me.

Niether they are both too expensive.....
Use a solvent based stain NOT a water based one.
Solvent based is dead easy to put on & really soaks into the wood.
    This is what I use........

Neither of them IMO I would go for http://www.decoratingdirect.co.uk/viewprod/t/TORSOLASB/

Just make sure you go for the slovent based one and not waterbased.Architectural Solignum penetrates deeply as opposed to sitting on top of the timber. It won't flake off either and although its not cheap it will last well over twice as long as the others.Has the consistancy of water but make sure you protect yorkstone, other paintwork etc or it will stain it.
It comes in a good range of colours too..........

If your moving after the Winter and your not bothered about a product lasting then why bother asking which brand to buy.Just buy any old rubbish and slap it on as they will all last 1 Winter.

I never said it was cheap , but I have a a few questions that anyone with experience of timber and timber products would have asked before mouthing off.

1: Whats the coverage per litre of Blackfriars compared to Solignum?

2: How many coats are recommended?

3: How many coats will be needed? more coats will be needed if the timber hasn't been maintained for some time.

4: How long is each product likely to last before you need to re-coat?.

Time will tell if a product is value for money but don't think that because a product is cheap its value for money.;)

PS:Not everyone wants green or Brown, there are far more colours out there.

    Same.

    One

    One coat

No idea depennds on the exposure of the timber

Used Blackfriars for 15 years time enough ??

So why say "Your having a laugh"?

I've used allorts of products in the last 25 years and I can say with a fair amount of experience that giving any product 1 coat ain't gonna last any length of time.

Can you post a link to the data sheets for the Blackfriars ?.

I use Blackfriars products and generally speaking they are pretty good but IMO theres nothing better than Architectural Solignum for coverage, penetration and protection.....Giving any weathered timber 1 coat of anything won't give a uniformed finish.

Sorry I think we are getting wires crossed.I meant how many coats do Blackfriars recommend giving timber, but I guess its just you who recommend 1 coat and not Blackfriars......Thats the only reason I asked about a data sheet.......;)
  • Wish I'd never asked! <rolls eyes> ;)

I can see that this is an old post; but it made super reading!!!
My comment is only that Cuprinol is a total waste of money.
I have for years used the cheapo own brands of wood stain; with maybe a repaint or a freshen up every year or even biannually.
It is cheap so I don't expect too much, however this year I bought Cuprinol with its alleged 5 year life.
Utter twaddle, it cost 4 times the price of ASDA's own brand, needed two coats and within a month is showing signs of fading.
As for Blackfriar I have used their paints over the years and have found them to be excellent, but please do not "tell me off" for that.

    Bye-bye........................
