why do you have few choices?

Aviva are huge so there are lots of problem cases out there. Personaly I would avoid them as I think they are too big and use large contracting companies who are generaly dissinterest in the work they are doing.

You don't say if you are considering Aviva direct or via a broker or via a partnership?

Aviva is a giant organisation and can be a very different beast depending on how your gaining access to it and what value adds the intermediary is adding if you aren't going direct - going via an intermediary also doesnt necessarily mean higher costs.

I wouldn't, having had difficulties with Asprea [story snipped to avoid accusations of 'unfairness', but you'll find a ton of similar stories on this forum].

People tend to forget that Asprea deal with thousands of claims for Aviva each year with no problems whatsoever. To say not to use an insurer because of Asprea isnt really fair.

Quite right :D I referenced others' good experiences for this reason.

But the poster asked for thoughts (opinions?) on the matter. My opinion is necessarily coloured by my experiences...

It's totally fair to say avoid Aviva because of Aspria. One person getting the treatment I got is one too many.
You might as well say it's unfair to condemn a murderer because he only killed one person when he had the chance to have killed fifty.

I have just had a claim go through very speedily on my contents insurance with Aviva. I was paid in full 48 hours after submitting estimates for replacing damaged items to the LA - I don't think you can ask for better than that.

You may as well flip a coin with this sort of question.

There will always be plenty of people who had a terrible experience with a particular insurer & just as many very happy ones.

All of the major insurers will instruct loss adjustors to look into household claims (bar small claims) & some are much better than others - you could say it's the luck of the draw.

It's very similar to car insurance - if you have an accident the insurer decides who their approved repairer will be & you get very little say in the matter, unless you want to pay for the repairs yourself & try and claim it back later, which is very risky these days! The point is some approved repairers are excellent & some are very poor.

As with most things it comes down to cost - if Aviva are significantly cheaper than everyone else you may have to take the risk.
    :)
