Rundll32 sent to virus vault now PC isn't working...

Options
Earlier AVG flashed up about some trojan, and I sent it to the virus vault along with rundll32.

little did I know how important this file was, as now I can't do anything on my pc. I can't get any programmes to even open - that includes AVG.

Tried to download a registry repair programme and my pc won't open them - it takes me to an 'open with' box, with a list of programmes to choose from.

Can anyone help? Short of wiping my whole pc, I have no idea what to do! I tried to do system restore and go back a few days, but I can't seem to open that either.

Thanks.

Best not to download any 'registry repair programs' for future reference, most will make things worse IMO.

What version of Windows? I.e. XP, Vista, Win 7?

^It won't let me open anything I downloaded anyway :S The only thing I can open is the internet, amazingly.

    I'm using XP.

Can fix part of it if you download and run FixNCR.reg. Save it to the desktop, then right click and select 'Merge', or double click on it.
    http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/reg/FixNCR.reg

If programs work, then try System Restore to a point before all this.

Hmmm Rundll should be a protected file, so I'm surprised it let you - either the infection was so nasty as to be running beneath the os detection, or it was a rogue file names rundll, or something. And AVG shouldn't have quarantined it unless it was trashed itself.

    Sysrestore may help?

That's my guess, just one of the one's that install themselves into Appdata or ProgramData, or a registry entry.

I've just done this and system restore to a few days ago, and it seems to have worked -- at least things are opening now. Really appreciate the help, thanks :)

No worries. Might be an idea to run Malwarebytes and do a QUICK scan. Afterwards, clean anything it finds and post the log if you like. Malwarebytes is the best kind of program to deal with these kinds of infections, although not very good with rootkits once established. http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam-download.php

Also feel free to post a Hijackthis log here as well. Save this file to the desktop http://www.trendmicro.com/ftp/products/hijackthis/beta/HijackThis.exe, then hold LEFT SHIFT, Right click on it and Run As (current user, and untick the 'protect me'). Do a SCAN and SAVE LOG. Post the log that comes up in notepad.

I would also run something like Temp File Cleaner to clear out all temp files, Java cache, etc, as some of the files will still be there. Afterwards, reboot the computer http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/files/file/187-tfc-temp-file-cleaner-by-oldtimer/

Also if you don't mind, can you look in the AVG quarantine for what was put in there, and confirm the location of the rundll32 file. Ideally it won't be c:\windows\system32

The Malwarebytes quick scan was clear.

I had a look in AVG virus vault and the only file in there from today is 'FLI.exe'.

I'm not sure how to find the rundll32 file? I did search and it came up with a few files named rundll32 and one of them is in system32. There's another in i386 and a couple of others.

Here's the hijackthis log (removed my name & replaced with stars):

I meant that ideally any quarantined 'rundll32' files won't be from the system32 folder - as the real (and needed) one is from there ;)

You've got the Ask toolbar, I'd advise you to uninstall that in Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs

Also you should turn off Spybot's teatimer & SDhelper, as neither have been stopping any of these malware programs from downloading or causing changes - they just slow things down and can cause conflicts with AVG.

Might be an idea to uninstall Java, unless you have a program that specifically uses it. Most people have Java but never need it, and it becomes a vector for infection.

Lots of bloat you could remove for a faster PC.

I would load Hijackthis again, and TICK then FIX the following items:
    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://uk.ask.com?o=15438&l=dis
    O2 - BHO: AskBar BHO - {201f27d4-3704-41d6-89c1-aa35e39143ed} - C:\Program Files\AskBarDis\bar\bin\askBar.dll
    O2 - BHO: Spybot-S&D IE Protection - {53707962-6F74-2D53-2644-206D7942484F} - C:\PROGRA~1\SPYBOT~1\SDHelper.dll
    O2 - BHO: DriveLetterAccess - {5CA3D70E-1895-11CF-8E15-001234567890} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\DLA\DLASHX_W.DLL
    O2 - BHO: JQSIEStartDetectorImpl - {E7E6F031-17CE-4C07-BC86-EABFE594F69C} - C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\lib\deploy\jqs\ie\jqs_plugin.dll
    O3 - Toolbar: Ask Toolbar - {3041d03e-fd4b-44e0-b742-2d9b88305f98} - C:\Program Files\AskBarDis\bar\bin\askBar.dll
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ctfmon.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe
    O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-18\..\Run: [CTFMON.EXE] C:\WINDOWS\system32\CTFMON.EXE (User 'SYSTEM')
    O4 - HKUS\.DEFAULT\..\Run: [CTFMON.EXE] C:\WINDOWS\system32\CTFMON.EXE (User 'Default user')
    O4 - Startup: OpenOffice.org 2.4.lnk = C:\Program Files\OpenOffice.org 2.4\program\quickstart.exe
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SpybotSD TeaTimer] C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy\TeaTimer.exe

    O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Spybot - Search & Destroy Configuration - {DFB852A3-47F8-48C4-A200-58CAB36FD2A2} - C:\PROGRA~1\SPYBOT~1\SDHelper.dll
    O23 - Service: ASKService - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\AskBarDis\bar\bin\AskService.exe
    O23 - Service: ASKUpgrade - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\AskBarDis\bar\bin\ASKUpgrade.exe

You might also TICK and FIX this entry as the Sansa program doesn't need to automatically be running all the time:
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SansaDispatch] C:\Documents and Settings\*************\Application Data\SanDisk\Sansa Updater\SansaDispatch.exe

I would then go into Start > Run > MSCONFIG, then click on the STARTUPS tab and untick the following so they no longer startup automatically:
    [Adobe Reader Speed Launcher] "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 9.0\Reader\Reader_sl.exe"
    [Adobe ARM] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\ARM\1.0\AdobeARM.exe"
    [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\jusched.exe"
    [DivXUpdate] "C:\Program Files\DivX\DivX Update\DivXUpdate.exe" /CHECKNOW
    [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
    [ISUSPM Startup] C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\INSTAL~1\UPDATE~1\ISUSPM.exe -startup
    [ISUSScheduler] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\UpdateService\issch.exe" -start

It'll ask you to reboot, but no need unless you want to. Next time you reboot, these unnecessary programs won't start and you may notice a performance improvements.

Other programs you might consider unticking in MSCONFIG. If it turns out you needed one for a particular feature, then you can just retick it.
    [IAAnotif] C:\Program Files\Intel\Intel Matrix Storage Manager\Iaanotif.exe
    [ATICCC] "C:\Program Files\ATI Technologies\ATI.ACE\cli.exe" runtime -Delay
    [DMXLauncher] C:\Program Files\Dell\Media Experience\DMXLauncher.exe
    [DLA] C:\WINDOWS\System32\DLA\DLACTRLW.EXE
    [OrderReminder] C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\OrderReminder\OrderReminder.exe
    [SigmatelSysTrayApp] stsystra.exe

System32 is thr right pllace for rundll32 to live, and it is a protected file. This means if you try to move/delete/rename that file, it pops right back up as it was, and is rock solid. No need for it to exist elsewhere, so likely the virus created a file it called rundll32 to scare you into not removing it (thinking it was a part of the core system, and running a check on the name would also suggest so)
