Need Some Advice Please

Hi Guys,
I hope someone can give me some advice. I moved into a new property at the begining of this year. I tried to switch my electricity supplier from Scottish Power to British Gas. However they are not letting me switch because they claim that money is owed on the account.
It turns out the last tenant went off without paying. It turns out we both have the same last name. I have received an latter for payment from Scottish Power with the surname but no first name. Also the surname is the same as mine but is spelt differently.
Can someon please advise me as to what i should do? Is there a template letter I can write to Scottish Power asking them for details of the previous owner to show that it was not me? It seems the previous owner was paying a fixed rate of £80.00 a month and they want £1200!
This is a bit of a mess which I want sorted. I hope someone can help. Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks,

Did you give your details to the supplier together with the reading the day you moved in? I have the feeling that this is where it is going wrong.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature.
