BHS returns policy

I purchased a knife block from BHS home approximately 4 weeks ago. I bought it during one of their big sales and it was a bargain £18 down from £60 and was a good brand (Prestige). Fast forward a few weeks and suddenly every single knife in the block is covered in rust despite them being stainless steel. So I take them back today to BHS to get a refund as they are obviously faulty. Unfortunately I no longer have the receipt but I did provide proof of purchase by showing them the payment on my bank statement. They would not however give me my money back, despite them agreeing I had provided proof of purchase, I could only get a credit note.
Am I right in thinking I was legally entitled to a refund as the product was faulty?

Thanks in advance for your help!

No, they can offer to repair, replace, or refund.

Thanks but they obviously couldn't repair, they agreed it would be silly to replace as it would probably just happen again so the only option was to refund, my problem is with the method of refund- was I entitled to a debit card refund (method of payment) or was I obliged to accept a credit note?

The proof of purchase you gave does not specify what you bought. You could have bought anything at £18 4 weeks ago and be using your bank statement to return something you bought a long time ago. I'd personally accept a credit note.

I'm not getting at you but it's not difficult to keep receipts. It does save a lot of hassle if you can produce them when you have a problem.

Even the best quality kitchen knives can show rust spots if not looked after (I don't class these knives in that bracket btw). Let me guess, you stick them in the dishwasher, then straight into the knife block without fully drying them off first.

Do yourself a favour, if you want to care for your knives then hand wash and dry properly in the future.

This is the cause of the rusting, they're not faulty just ensure they are dry before putting them in the block.

Actually they came out of the dishwasher rusty and none of my other knives have done this (gone rusty), only these new ones which makes me think it's the fault of the new knives. Anyway- my dishwasher dries stuff before it finishes- don't all of them?!
    Thanks for your help
