Purchased a Gardening book today, arrived today, cant elive what I received

hi all,

As the weather is getting better, I thought I would polish up my skills. Purchased a Beginners gardening book with five star ratings. The book arrived today. I opened the front cover, and noticed there was date stamps inside, and "property of a county council libary service" is this legal? Although the description of the book was described as "very good" condition, the spine of the book is coming away from the pages. Any thoughts?

The library probably bought new ones and told the older more tatty versions on.

That or the sellers costs of sales are very very low indeed :D

My local library (now closed down) used to have a book sale twice a year but all the "property of Surrey county council library service" markings had been overstamped stating that the book was legally obtained by the new owner.

I don't know if this is the case with every library, but I would have thought that would have had a similar system in place.

Of course it's legal. Libraries sell off their unwanted books, people buy them, my DD has dozens. Sometines the library stams them 'Withdrawn' but they often forget. You could always phone the library it came from to check it is withdrawn.

As long as the book has been withdrawn and was being sold as second hand and not new, what could possibly illegal?

Common practice I believe, I have certainly bought via Amazon like this and there are usually comments on the product listing as to condition and some mention they are ex-library.

I have found them to be in good condition and very good value.

My local library sells of any old books at 20p each!

Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

As well as, the seller may have had to pay the cost of the book for not returning after misplacing it and subsequently finding it. It happens in our house all the time. :D

I've purchased books from amazon which were former library books, was slightly annoyed that this wasn't stated but they have all the pages so they suit my needs just fine!

I've sold books on Amazon which came from the library of a school which closed. I put that it was ex-school stock in the listing. Check your seller didn't do that. Some of them were like new as they had just sat on the shelf for years. Obviously not great books for children as they had never opened them but I think the collectors bought them (Ladybird non fiction) Shame really.
