Declined Car Insurance

Hi All,

Over a year ago, when my car insurance neared renewal time, I had a letter from my insurer advising that they were not going to offer a renewal quite. When asked they advised that it was because of my 3 x SP30's. (Speeding).

On the moneysuypermarket website, there is a single question that asks if I have ever been declined car insurance. I have checked both Yes and No and the difference is dramatic - for No, lots of insurers with competitive prices. With Yes, only 4 insuers with huge premiums. On both I fully disclosed the SP30s.

Question - Do I need to Check this 'yes' button given that my insurer advised that they declined due to the SP30s whcih are none the less fully detailed in the information provided.

All thoughts, opinions all very welcome!

Yes you do, if you plan on purchasing the policy without speaking to anyone at the insurer.

However, the best course of action would be to get quotes with the box ticked 'no', then call the relevant insurers to explain the circumstances surrounding it - i.e. your details fell outside your current insurer's criteria and there was no indication of dishonesty or carelessness on your part. If an insurer is happy to offer quotes with all the convictions disclosed, they should not have a problem with covering you if the circumstances that you describe are correct.

Did they decline you or did they advise that they wouldn't be able to insure you because of your three SP30's?
If you phoned them up and asked for a quote and said they couldn't because of your 9 points, would that be classed as declined or would they just be unable to quote?

I got a letter saying that they werent able to provide a quote. When I called they advised that it was because of the SP30s. Its a good question though and the killer point - does this class a decline? Not sure....

I'm no expert; but I'd take it as they couldn't provide a quote rather than you being refused. If you're a bloke and you did an online quote on Sheila's Wheels you'd probably get the same result, so to me they haven't declined to insure you but can't because you have too many points on your license.

Another website is asking the same thing and phrasing it as; "Ever been refused insurance in the past?". To me this is asking if if someone has ever been flat out un-insurable across the board. Am going to call them and ask for clarity. Will post back here when I know more.

It's ALWAYS best to check with the insurer to clarify in situations like this rather than wait till you have an incident and find you are not insured because of none disclosure of a material fact which may and probably would cost a lot more than the initial raised premium. Hope you got sorted soon and please slow down a bit 3 x SP30 is quite scary...

I spoke with an insurer. Apparently a lot of people are querying this at the moment. I was advised that this question does not refer to an insurer declining to quote (due to risk), rather it is primarily looking for people who have defaulted on direct debits and the like. Thanks everyone for your advice......
