urgent help please with sound problem - pc

I have had to format and re-install everything recently.
I am running windows xp, and am up to date with all auto updates.
I have external speakers connected, and when i test the sounds using the motherboard tester, i hear sounds... but when i try to play anything online, media player etc it says audio device not found - help!!!:o
Ok, ok, i need to go back onto Weightwatchers, lost 7 stone..... 2 back on, this has to change.....Help!!!:eek:

    look in device manager for missing drivers, which should be available on the manufacturers website
