closing old bank accounts

Options
Over the years have opened various bank accounts (mainly saving ones) with Barclays, (have a current account with them). Have now got quite a collection is there any way I can remove them when I log in or do I have to write to Barclays and ask them to

I don't know about Barclays, but with Lloyds I can't do it online. Check the T&C of the accounts, but I'd have thought you need to do it in writing (however they accept such instructions) or in person in branch.

Begbeer the best thing to do is to pop into branch with photo ID and close them all in one fail swoop.

Curious thing happened with me when trying to close a few bank accounts - wrote to a few, including ING and Halifax and they have both written to me saying I can't close the bank in writing but I have to phone them (allegedly for security reasons)!!! I don't want to phone them. I prefer my correspondence to be in writing, with my signature on. I am so tempted to get someone else to phone using my security details and then write to them saying it wasn't me!!! :p If they won't let me close an account in writing then surely they should allow me to do it online - they let me apply online, after-all!

I suspect this is all less to do with security and more to do with marketing.

It all seems rather preposterous to be honest. Since when did my signature count for nothing?!

I'll probably just leave the accounts open with nothing in - they'll hopefully realize its costing them money and close them down anyway!

  • Had similar problems. ING would only close by phone and Santander and NatWest only by letter. Haven't come across any that you can close online.

You can insist on doing it whatever way the Terms and Conditions specify.

You just need to call their telephone banking team on 08457 555 555. They will do that straight away for you.
I just closed my “essential saving” today using the aforementioned number.
I tried to do it online but it could not find such option that allows me to do it myself using on-line banking. If someone knows how to do it on-line I am also interested in knowing this. Next time I will do it myself rather than to ask their telephone banking team.
