Has anyone ever come across this problem before:

on the curser i keep getting a square box that covers the curser like prison cell bars

also the laptop has been acting very strange recently with it shutting down saying it has incurred a problem and has shut down to protect it.

I have run cc cleaner and malware bytes with nothing showing and use avast as my virus protection.

Sounds as though you may have a memory or hardware problem. Download Memtest and make the CD, then boot from it, you may have to change the boot sequence in the bios. Let it run at least overnight to see if it finds any memory problem.
