I really hope someone can help.

I bought an Advent Vega Tablet today from currys. As the chap was handing it over he said to take advantage of the android apps, I was to go onto Mondaco and it was "dead easy" to download something that would put android market on etc. this is fully legal as it is open source etc. I have not found it easy, but I have managed to understand that I need to connect my PC to my tablet, enable USB debugging then download and extract Pau's zipped files and then run the set up file from the command line. The trouble is, my PC (and I have tried a windows 7 and windows xp do not recognise the android as a driver for nvidia harmony cannot be found. When the PC can't see the tablet, it won't do the run command (it says daemon started but goes no further). Lots more digging seems to tell me that I cannot get an nvidea harmony driver as it is no longer supported. I want to post my problems in the mondaco forum (as the peeps in there are friendly and knowledgeable), but every time i try and post reply I get a screen of gobbledegook and so can't get a message to them. In my device manager it shows nvidia with a big yellow question mark, so I know this is the main problem. I realise this is very specific, but please can someone help me - even if only how to post in mondaco forums). I feel if I can just get my PC to recognise the tablet, I would be away. Once I have android market on, I wouldn't really be after anything else. Very grateful for any advice (please, not of the "you should have bought an ipad or a dearer tablet nature" thanks). Sal xx

Thanks both, Fifer has (via his link) shown me how I can download directly from android market, which i did but then realised it was downloading to the SD card in an android phone I have ( a cheapy t-mobile pulse which i love and mad me keen on the android to start with) . I am going to give it another go in the morning. The tablet had trouble booting up after I last posted, and then trouble connecting to wi-fi. I suspect a "re-consider" is necessary...thanks for the help though. Salxxx

Thanks Mitch, I did what you suggested and installed vega tools which did get over the worst problem which is the PC not seeing the table, I then tried to install the R8 but still got a similar message, and was just on the point of investigating when the thing would not switch on, then eventually I got it to turn on and it would go no further than the little green android symbol, then kept re-booting but never getting further. I was fairly fed up with it by then (had spent about 10 hours on it) and took it back to curry/pc world, where the bloke looked at it - confirmed the fault and said "this is the third one we have had back with this issue today" I also mentioned the difficulties re nvidia drivers etc, and he said "yes and that too". I still suspect my ineptitude played a part. Agree with you that if you manage to get the ROM functionality, market etc, it must be a cracking tablet for the price. I have decided to do what I originally planned and order a 7" tablet from amazon for 79.99 which has 2.2 android, flash and has market and kindle pre-installed (for knackers like me presumably). Downsides being no capacitive screen (although has a g-sensor) but it is for my 7 year old's birthday, and to be fair, she will be just as pleased with that. Realise could be a dud, but I'll take the chance and see how we get on. Thanks again to you and fifer for your help, I always find this a lovely forum with people who genuinely offer help and don't mock the technically afflicted :rotfl: sal x

Oh, I forgot to add that I also found another resolution - I've got an amazingly cheap pulse mini phone with android (which is where I realised that I was quite happy with the android world and didn't need apple) and could have simply put a 16g microSD in and done all the downloads I wanted then moved the SD card to the vega but realised this would be an on-going clart on, so sort of dismissed this - although I think it would have been a resolution.

Finally (sorry for long posts - it is very cathartic after what I have been through with it) given the amount of time I had to play with it, I was surprised to find I wasn't as enamoured with the tablet format as I thought I would be. Although it was for my daughter, it was also a "try before you buy" for me. I kept propping it up and wishing I had a keyboard and mouse. There's an element of "get used to it", but I have had a lenova small lappy for work, and a small netbook for our hols, and I still insist on attaching a mouse to both :-). I was also very worried about the dropability of it ( I nearly did this twice ), and also fancied using it as a kindle (my pulse is too small to really be used as a book reader) but I again thought that a 10.1 tablet is actually too big to be one, so I am looking forward to a 7" tablet. Husband is very pleased it has gone back, as well as my bad mood, he still bears the scars of when I bought him a linux PC. Sal x
