Step 1 - ask council for a list in writing of what needs to be done to put it right and stop court case.

Step 2 - copy list and give to three builders for quotes.

Step 3 - Go with the quote that works best.

    Step 4 - Sell house.

Doesn't sound difficult or particularly time consuming to me.

Oh and if any of my kids tried to do this to me I would rip their legs off and beat them to death with the soggy end ;)

Does the pope modify grade 2 listed buildings without permission?
    Are bears catholic?
Do the inlaws poop in the woods?

    2/3 ain't bad.

If unsound then it's too late for power of attorney isn't it?

If they're of sound mind then let them deal with it.

Loads of people mess up listed buildings and get into trouble - some for doing sensible things like replacing plastic drainpipe with metal - because it's what's in the listing that's important.

The kids need to make time to sit down and discuss the situation with the parents.

The council will know what they want doing and a decent conservation office will give pointers as to where to find the right sort of workmen.

The in-laws got themselves into this mess, against all sensible advice. Now let them get themselves out of it

Probably a lack of listed building consent, rather than PP.

This is a criminal offence as well as the other potential problems.

That's true, but is it something which a local builder will be able, or even want, to get involved with?

Depends very much on the builder!

The two working on my parents' house, who are brothers, only deal with buildings in their local area built before about 1600.
