Holidaying in Mexico

Sorry to hijack your thread, but my friend and her OH are hoping to go to Mexico next April. She's been flicking through travel agent brochures, but I think she'll be able to get a better rate booking independently. Where did all of you Mexico experts book your trips? She says she wants to go to either Playa del Carmen or Cancun, I think the former is better but having never visited, I have no idea!
She's adamant she wants a 4*+ hotel (despite me repeatedly telling her the * system is practically worthless!) and as she's had a naff year or so, I'd like to help her as much as possible. Any hotel recommendations? She also wants child free....
She's always been one for package hols with her mum and Gran, whereas I prefer off the beaten track, so I was thinking of telling her to hire a car, but I worried that will scare her too much!
Thanks in advance!0 -
We're going to Puerto Morelos in just over 3 weeks time. Our resort is around 20 minutes drive from Cancun airport and looks lovely. We booked our flights directly with BA and the hotel/car hire directly with the hotel. We found a few websites that take bookings for our hotel - El Cid Marina - but none that did the room/service level we wanted, so that's why we booked direct with the hotel.
We intend to go to Xel-Ha or Xcaret whilst we're there but we'll mainly be chilling out on the beach/around the pool.
I've not read anything about spiders, just mossies but then we don't intend to anything more than I've mentioned above.0 -
I'm afraid we booked it as a package, can't quite recall who with. As for a 4 star hotel, the level of service is far better in a higher rated hotel, although our 3 star hotel was very nice with good food. It all depends on whether you are hanging around the hotel or going out.
If someone wants a child-free hotel, then a premium would have to be paid and you would have to go with someone like Sandals or another child-free company. Not sure I would take the word of the hotel on if it was child-free.What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare0 -

If you have the choice between the two, I'd say Cancun. Acapulco is very dangerous due to drug gangs. Actually, my colleagues and I are not allowed to go there - under any circumstances.Call me what you like, I was a bit "tiddly" when I chose my username

Playa Del Carmen is much better. There are a couple of adults only resorts but TBH there weren't that many kids at the all-welcome resort we went to (Riu Tequila) - more adults p1ssing at the swim-up bar. It wasn't a particularly relaxing place though, if that's what you want.0 -
we went on a package with kuoni and stayed in new york on the way back which was amazing, they got our flights, transfers and hotel in mexico and I sorted out the hotel in new york0

me and dh went to playacar , which is a couple of km from playa del carmen. It was lovely we went to chichin itza (sorry for spelling) and xel ha (sorry for spelling) and there was a tropical bird place a couple of hundred metres from the hotel.
Don't remember seeing any nasty creepy crawlies, although it wouldn't of bothered me, sf was obsessed with finding lizards to take pictures of !!!!
The beach was lovely, the hotel (riu tequilla) was lovely, we went in september and it was just a bit hot !!!! ( it was mexico what did i expect , lol). However even when its 33 degrees you can still walk on the sand.
playa del carmen was a nice town for a walk round, never been to cancun , but can reccomend playa del carmen, as long as you don't mind the heat
