PLUMBING HELP!!! - Water inlet into toilet

Options
Hi, the connection between my ball valve and the plastic thread of the inlet into the toilet cistern is leaking, i've tried tightening the nut (which is made of brass) but the leaking just got worse! so i loosened off the nut and wrapped ptfe around the plastic thread and then re-tightened the nut however it is still leaking! i think i may have chewed up the thread on the plastic so i am going to buy some new insides tomorrow so that i can replace the damaged fitting. Any tips on how i can prevent damaging the thread on my new fitting? is this a common problem?
Aoccdrnig to a rscheearch at an Elingsh uinervtisy, it deosn't mttaer in waht oredr the ltteers in a wrod are, the olny iprmoetnt tihng is taht frist and lsat ltteer is at the rghit pclae. The rset can be a toatl mses and you can sitll raed it wouthit porbelm. Tihs is bcuseae we do not raed ervey lteter by it slef but the wrod as a wlohe.

tighten the nut with a spanner and not a pair of grips you should get more control by using a spanner.
I think the best way would be to tighten the bold and then turn on the water, if it leaks then tighten up some more.
Dont forget to put some PTFE ttape round the thread (not to much though)

Do i need to use a fibre washer as well? or is that not necessary?

  • Hi

A common D.I.Y. mistake . Not all threads need ptfe. In this case putting tape on the plastic thread just makes the nut harder to do up. The real joint is the fibre washer. If you want to put tape on it then that's the place to put it. The fibre washer should be enough. You might have cross threaded the ball valve thread so it might be a good idea to buy new and start again.

i dont see how i could have cross threaded the ball valve thread as it is made of brass and the male connection on the cistern is plastic.

  • Hi
Don't quite follow you here . You OP states you are worried you have chewed up the thread.
Perhaps you could draw me a picture.

You will have a hair-line crack in the plastic thread, this happens quite alot.

You need to change the ballvalve.
