tar on car from roadworks

hi

on my way back from work there was road works. The workmen had just litrelery put the tar down and were rolling down the stones. I drove through extremely slow as I have just put my car up for sale today and was hoping to have some viewers this weekend. when I got home to clean the car i noticed tar and stones all over the wheel arches thick it is. It is all over the bottom of the door. I phoned the council to complain I if the tar was that freshly laid maybe a diversion route should of been put up til it was dry enough. They said the would send out a leaflet and once I read it and still wanted to peruse the claim they would then send me out the claim form.

Has anyone had any problems like this before with claiming from the council?

Tar will come of easy enough-polish/road traffic film remover should do it or failing that turps in small quantities. If you're worried about it damaging your paint just test it on a bit of paint under the bonnet.

I've always found that WD40 is very good at removing tar.

so long as car hasnt had any recent paint to tart it up prior to a sale even petrol on a rag will clear the bodywork
put on rag mind dont swish it on like a pyromaniac

please dont complain about road repairing though because where i am council would prefer to go on soujerns rather than repair holes

WD40 is excellent at tar removal - let it soak and then rub off.

Oh good grief! Compensayshun culture strikes again. Next people will be wanting to claim when their car gets dirty because an agricultural vehicle has dumped a load of mud on the road!

Just give it a clean. Good advice above.

  • Another thing worth checking is the tyres. (this will be extremely time consuming, but could save a lot of grief in the long run).

If some of the tread is bunged up with tar, not only could this affect the grip in the wet, stones and other debris may become lodged there and if constantly pushing on the same spot on the tyre, could damage it or cause a puncture.
