ASDA Lexmark Print Cartridges - My rights

Hey,
Bought an ASDA compatible black Lexmark cartridge about 3 months ago (no receipt now, but I bet I can find it on my bank statements somewhere).
Today it's stopped printing properly, and cleaning the heads don't work. It's half full still according to the printer. Took it back to ASDA, and was told by the not-so-helpful person in charge of the department that there is nothing they can do, no exchange, refund or anything - as this just happens sometimes.
Surely the cartridge was not fit for purpose if it does not print? None of the Lexmark genuine ones i've had in the past have done this and I have always been able to empty them no matter how long they have been in my printer.
Going to write a letter to the ASDA store CC'ing ASDA HQ as I am appauled with the service. £12 is a lot of money for me (Student!) So need some ammo for them! I'm thinking Sale and Supply of Goods Act - Not fit for purpose of which it was designed.
Cheers,
Tom

I am stopped using compatiable cartridges after attemting to save money. They sometimes, won't print and I had continuious print head cleaning. In the end I gave up and went back to originals. Never going back there again.0

I agree with you sparxy. Clearly not fit for purpose. I have a Lexmark printer too but as yet have restricted myself to buying the genuine XL sized cartridges at the cheapest prices I can find on ebay. I pay more than you but that doesn't mean you have to like the ASDA product and lump it.
You might initially try the ASDA helpline on 0800952 0101 and explain everything to them and get a reference you can quote instore because they usually ask you to speak directly to the store to obtain a refund/replacement. You can clear the lack of receipt whilst you speak with them if you mention it before they do. We would have houses swamped with half-faded receipts if we kept them all from supermarkets like Asda who take on average a good third of our disposable incomes....
Let us know how you get on ... if ultimately they are resistant to your advances, point them at this thread where we are waiting to hear good news ...0 -
Unfortunately, we've been looking for an excuse to get rid of this printer, and today was the last straw - so went out and picked up a Kodak printer. Don't know why I didn't before!
I'll ring them tomorrow afternoon and see where I get!0 -
You've pretty much voided your warranty on the printer by using a none genuine ink cartridge and there's no evidence that the issue is with the cartridge and not the printer.
Unless you replace with a genuine cartridge and the printer works, then you don't know where the fault lies. So trying to go to Asda quoting the sale of goods act because the cartridge isn't fit for purpose is like wanting Esso to refund your petrol because you have a failed head gasket and can't drive the car.
Although it's usually cheaper to replace a Lexmark than it is to replace the ink.0 -
Lexmark cartridges have the print-heads in the cartridge, rather than on the printer. I am 100% sure it is the cartridge and not the printer. If you wipe the head of the black cartridge, it changes the pattern of the streaks of no ink on the paper. Tried cleaning it multiple times but still streaky!0
