I don't know what you'd call 'small batches,' but mine are 5-7 litres, depending on the weight of the compost, so that's well over 20 litres an hour.
My compost microwave is a large 1000 watts model given to me because it was old and outdated. They don't make 'em like that any more, but my local recycling centre has plenty of others £5 - £8.
Smell? No, not unless you cook some worms, then leave them in there for 24hrs to 'mature,' which is why I warned people about that too.

I re-read the OP's post and I think he means last years used pots of multipurpose. If so, digging in is the best for them,.The word compost can be confusing can't it?I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.0

Yes you can, after all you don't throw out the garden soil at the end of the season !! I either recycle it in the compost bin or reuse it directly but mix nutrients into it (such as blood fish & bone) to replace what has been used.0

That's what I thought too, and for most people digging in would make the most sense, but for those who have a large amount of containerised stuff it could be worth recycling, hence my suggestion.0
