Sky +

Options
If anyone has Sky + you might be able to save some money.

Sky offer the '+' features free of charge on the top tarriffs. IIRC if your tarriff is less than £40 you don't get this benefit. You are charged £10 to retain this recording function if you for instance drop to the entertainmant package.

I've cancelled my subscription, completley.

As long as you have both inputs connected you can use all the recording functions available, live pause, dual record etc etc.

The technology is in the box, they cannot turn this off. If you are paying the £10 for nothing!, tell them to cancel it!

EDIT - You must have your phone line DISCONNECTED.

Rick.

Ive just cancelled my sky package (had the top package and sky plus) so now i only get the few free channels that they offer, the sky plus facility has also been turned off, even though all wires etc are still in place, so if you cancel it, it does get turned off!!!!
  • Strange??

Do you have your telephone connection still connected?
I disconnected my ages ago, never had a problem.

Rick, you have just been lucky. Sky can and do control all the functionality of a Sky+ box remotely. They send updates to your viewing card via the satellite and do not use the phone so it makes no difference if you have the phone line connected or not.

What should have happened when you cancelled is that Sky should have updated your subscription record and sent this to your viewing card via the satellite broadcast. They have either neglected to do it or it is in a job queue to be done.

Most users who cancel lose the Sky+ recording functionality either immediately or fairly soon afterwards. You are one of the few lucky ones who has benefited from a Sky error or delay.

I would strongly advise anyone else not to try this as your chances of also being lucky are very slim.

Along similar lines some people think they can avoid paying Sky charges for Movies and other pay per view charges by disconnecting the phone line. This works by preventing the box phoning Sky and reporting ppv usage. However the card records all the information and, if you ever connect the phone line again it will download all the data. People who have tried this thought they had dodged charges until they suddenly get a huge bill months or even a year or two later. In theory you could claim to have lost the card but Sky are fairly wise to all the tricks so again your chances of getting away with it are very slim.

Sorry but Sky have security very tightly sewn up.;)
  • I would say give it a go!
