IS it Legal to charge US for the Windfarm Feed In Tariff?

The electricity companies charge us for giving windfarm owners greatly subsidised Feed In Tarriffs for the electricity.

I object to this because I hate the misery that onshore turbines cause in small rural communities. There is nothing green about these companies, they would not do it unless we pay them to produce electricity at ridiculously subsidised prices. This is not legal!

May I suggest that you write the following:

Dear Sir/Madam:

I am writing to you about the ‘Government Obligations’ charge applied to my electricity bill. It is my understanding that your company uses this money to fund the renewable energy conditions placed on you by the UK Government. It is my opinion that this arrangement between the UK Government and the energy companies should not infringe my own legal rights in any way, without my express written permission being sought.

I have checked my records and I’m unable to find any correspondence from your company requesting my express permission, either written or orally, to apply this charge to my electricity bill. Taking this into consideration, I now advise you of the following:

i. I am of the opinion that the 6% charge placed on my electricity bill by Energy Supplier is in violation of Regulation 5(1) of the Unfair Terms in Consumer Contracts Regulations 1999 (as amended). Consumer Contracts Regulations 1999 (as amended). I am sure you are aware that the provisions of this regulation provide that an unfair term shall not be binding upon the consumer. I wish to make no further payments to Energy Supplier for this unlawful charge applied to my electricity bill and I therefore now request that henceforward you reduce all direct debit payments to my electricity account by the amount of these unlawful charges.

I look forward to hearing from you

    I love to see windmills and I love the fact that they generate green energy :)

    and I hope we get many more of them
  • they do not get paid unless they are told to `constrain` output - some call these subsidies , some say its a payment as per contract;

    BUT , all methods of power generation have the same mechinism - be it coal , gas, hydro , tidal , wind or nuclear - they all have the ability to `1constrain` or turn down the power ;

    the issue is the amount of money - where gas/nuclear/coal etc gtet paid whether they produce power or not (you did know that yes?) - wind farms only get paid when they are turning - under renewable obligations certificates at about £50 per mw/h.

    now unlike the rest , when there not making power , they dont get anymore money - so a contract is set between the wind farm owner and the national grid - and since they dont want to turn off the wind farm , the agreed contract figure is set something stupidly high ;

    so what happened?

    the national grid !!!!ed up - the wind and hydro plants were prodcing alot of power , and they had a problem sending it down to england - so they asked the wind farms to shut down.

    the best approach now is to improve to transmission of power across the country , but that costs alot of money , or renegotiate the contraint contracts
  • Kittie, you would not love them if you had to put up with the noise.
    I am green, I have solar panels etc etc., Wind Turbines create noise and Kill birds and bats. I also love nature- so the alternative to turbines renewables are fine.

    What on earth are you doing on Money Saving Expert, then?

    I'm sure there must be a 'Let's force consumers to spend money they can barely afford in pursuit of bogus science' website somewhere.

    Nicky, do you have a car, mobile phone or cat?

    Because each of those kill more birds and bats than wind turbines do (mobile phone is due to the comms masts).

    I'm all for more renewables, and that includes wind turbines. Have you not noticed that we are increasinly having to import our energy from abroad?

    And why is it that we are importing more energy from abroad? If there weren't a 30 year campaign against (co2 free and non-bat killing) Nuclear we'd have plenty of cheap electricity, but instead we import French Nuclear electricity instead.

    I'm all for renewables when they make sense, but when they are so expensive, so disruptive to village societies in many ways, so devisive with big financial gainers, require fossil based generation anyhow to correct for the grid instability they cause, and particularly when the cost of these things and other 'green' ideas are currently running at 37% of the wholesale energy cost and simply plonked on our electricity bills at a time when many are in fuel poverty anyhow, then I question whether they are such a great idea.

    Have you not noticed that we are increasinly having to pay rapidly rising energy bills, only restrained partly due to the cheaper energy available abroad from countries which haven't taken the same ideological, and nonsense in engineering terms, decisions we have?

    You can suggest that all you want, but it's not going to happen, and quite frankly, you are wrong.

    Shame they that when they do, that its a time when its not required.

    an explantion about the need to constrain the wind power -

    HERE

    But aren't those extra costs (to us) in addition to the massive subsidy that wind farm owners are already claiming via the feed in subsidy

    where do you get a figure of 37% from?

    I'm certain I've recently answered this very same question ... post 41 and 42 of the linked thread below refers
