    Jeepers I can't afford to die !

I reckon a cardboard coffin is a good place to start with price reduction: http://www.coffincompany.co.uk/cardboard-coffin

Thanks for the link, I like the idea of the wicker coffins, but does anyone else feel the site's "modelling" of the coffins is a bit... I dunno, odd? Leaning up against a tree, or a rundown barn door just doesn't seem right somehow?

    It's only a game

Great post, thankyou, we are thinking of getting one of those payment plan things (for the free tv) so the kids won't be burdened, and I really like the idea of a *green* funeral.
I wonder if it would be best to go with one of these plans (you know the one with parky) or contact a local undertaker and if possible arrange some sort of finance, but then what would happen if you moved away.
Not morbid at all, it's just that as a nation we don't like to speak about the reality of life/death.

ask your local undertaker if they do funeral plans .
I arranged one recently with a local undertaker .The first undertaker wasnt keen and told me I wouldnt want an expensive coffin (well I would have liked a choice ) .First quote for professional services only was £3200 .

Second undertaker much more professional .
    costs as follows
Professional Services including embalmer ,chapel of rest ,coffin ,coffin dressing ,coffin cover ,removal to church and cemetery .
Hearse ,limo and staff £2250 (first quote was £3200 for this part )

Death notice in paper for 2 days £165
    opening grave (not council) £200
seal grave and add additional gold lettering to headstone £275
    soloist/organist £120
    Two clergy £100
    50 memorial cards £70
    total £3180.

If your local undertaker won't, the Co-op does.

Not the cheeriest idea of a Friday night but if it helps someone sometime...
That said, it must pay to shop around if their most basic package is£2,850 this month.

I think the limo is just the black car that the elderly relatives or the immediate family travel in hehind the hearse. There is usually one at any funeral I've been at.
The limo is just like going to a wedding ,another sad event;)

My dad had put money in a bank account for his funeral (he died age 75) but his new wife of 1 year said she needed that money to live on! As she was the one who wanted to arrange the funeral, it was her that was legally responsible to pay for it. We (my sister and 2 brothers) left her to foot the bill as she already had his money!

I have a decent insurance policy set in place so hopefully should be ok. I hope!

the reason I paid for the funeral plan at this time is my relative may need to go into a nursing home at some stage ,and if the funeral is paid well they cant take it off you for nursing home fees .

And that is a very conservative cost! Lots of things will make a big difference to cost,if you are from belfast but living somewhere else in n.ireland when you go and family want to bury you back in belfast you are charged far more for grave opening than someone residing in the city.also cost of headstone can be heartstopping (no joke intended)Mother in law passed away a year or so back and after ground settled we went to get headstone (no surround allowed) Nice stone, marble with lettering £1750.:eek:But MIL had her insurance. She as with a lot of elderly no doubt Thought £2000 was a lot of money to leave but after all bills came in we paid over £1000 out of our own pockets but we never begrudged it as she was one of a kind.We were also lucky that we could afford it.If you can get the best insurance you can afford but the cost of that will depend on your age now and a lot of companies will ask for a medical if you want to insure yourself for a lot of money.
counting down the time I got left.:beer:
