I'm really sad about Habitat, but my pain will be eased if I can get a Robin Day sofa at 75% off.

Does it wear a silly bow tie and speak funny?

I think their main problem is running High St stores, very expensive in this day & age. Probably still a market for an online store though, the name alone is still very marketable.

i loved habitat in the 80s and a lot of our furniture was from there, but times have moved on - i went in the other week to spend my £5 gift card and didnt really like anything they had, then i found out i'd left it at home and so couldn't spend it any way - bet i can't spend the wretched thing now as they wont accept it.

Something a bit funny about the founder - that Jasper Conran. Something a bit 'funny' if you know what I mean. Probably likes 'musicals' if you take my drift....

I've always thought it had one of the best names ever for a business...absolutely brilliant name for a furniture store.

I always thought Ikea bought it as a 'trend forecasting' type retail outlet. A place to try out new shapes/ideas which could then move to the mass market in Ikea.
There was one in Brighton but I don't think I ever went in it so can't comment on it from a shopper POV.

Jasper is the founder's son. Well, one of them. Terence Conran has never been outed as a friend of Dorothy's as far as I know but I expect a few of them are customers of some of his rather nice restaurants.

I bought a very nice natural ash coffee table about 30 years ago. Very probably the fairer-hued cousin of Pastures New's. I've looked after it and it still looks brand-new. And still looks contemporary. Best £100 I ever spent imo

Not surprised at all about Habitat. I occasionally pop in to our local one but I don't think I've ever bought anything there. It seems full of overpriced tat. At least you can get cheap tat at Ikea.

Jane Norman is a little more surprising. I'm often dragged into one by my girlfriend and they always seem to be a busy mid-market clothes shop.
