making this hole???
I have dug round and under it but found nothing. Poured boiling water down it and covered it up again. Still it re-appears

I live in the sticks so do have some concerns about rats. I have seen no activity in the garden at all. The hole is about 2 inches across.

Mole?.............
It won't be a rat.0 -
I disagree and think it is likely to be a rat. Ground looks too hard for a mole, but I have seen rats eat through concrete. Shove some rat poison down it and block it up with a heavy rock, give it a while then look to see if the poison has been taken."Ignore the eejits...it saves your blood pressure and drives `em nuts!"0

I have mole hills in the border - well mole hill singular - this is a clean hole and nothing like the mole hill.
I will go to the DIY shed and get something to finish it off - no good going to pets at home as they think poisoning rats is cruel - can you tell they are not pestered by rats!
Edited to say - we have very sandy, light soil here.Mags - who loves shopping0 -
Hubby thinks its more likely field mice or could be mole, they dont always leave a huge mound behind. Just leave it, not doing you no harm, dont need to poison field mice if it is them.0

Of course it doesn't look like a molehill the ground is hard and dry and it will just be using a track just under the path to get from one side to another.0

Fair enough, but I don`t know why rats wouldn`t be your first thought...looks like a typical rat hole to me. I also live rural and am used to seeing them."Ignore the eejits...it saves your blood pressure and drives `em nuts!"0

You could sprinkle some flour around the hole - just enough to show up footprints
That should give you some idea of the animal size - I think two inches diameter is a bit narrow for a rat - could be mice0 -
mice or rats.

We have a very similar problem but live on an estate which isn't rural. The front garden is gravelled and a hole has appeared next to the house. The gravel kept disappearing down it. Hubby put a board over it and the hole appeared further along. Think I saw a mole nose at one point sticking out of it - only caught a glimpse! Ask at your local council for advice, remember rats can get through spaces 2cm across.
