Fail to stop accident

What happens when the other party fails to stop after an accident with reagrds to insurance will I have to pay the excess? and lose no claims bonus? it has been reported to the police unfortunately no registration number was taken.

  • You always have to pay the excess which is for your own car and then if and when they prove that someone else was liable and your insurance co. get paid they reimburse you. It takes months even if there is no doubt about who else was involved. You will lose the NCB unless it is protected i.e. you were paying extra to protect it.

The Motor Insurance Bureau is who flang means.

Unfortunately this would come under the untraced driver agreement as the TP is unknown which gives limited cover for non-injury claims. I believe the agreement may have changed since my days in claims but the cover used to be only for out of pocket expenses like your excess or PI claims and even then is subject to a £300 excess, so if your own excess is £200 and you have no other costs you wouldnt be able to claim from the MIB at all.

As to NCD etc - "fault" in an insurers definition is a claim against your policy where your insurers are unable to recover all their monies. Therefore traditionally a hit and run counts as a fault claim. There are a couple of insurers however that have done high visibility adverts about the fact that they dont count hit and runs as fault claims so it can be worth asking the question.
