£300 bill for gas & electric when on a key meter

I put £15 on a gas prepayment key and £10 on an electric prepayment key for a house I was at last month. I was only at the house for one week end and actually only used the electric and before I left, I still had £8.00 credit left on electric and £15 on gas.

Scottish Power were the suppliers. I have since received a bill from them for both gas & electric totalling £300.00. When I queried it with them they quickly agreed to amend the bill and then sent me bills totally £12.00 saying I had incurred weekly charges to this amount even though the house was empty and has been empty for a while.

I don't know much at all about prepayment meters but this doesn't seem right to me. What do you think?

Lots of tariffs have a weekly standing charge. This still accrues even when no fuel is used.

You say you 'used for one weekend', is it a weekend cottage or something which means it empty lots of the time?
