Oxfam Advert

Sorry if this has been raised in another thread but i was wondering if any one had seen the tele ad for oxfam where you can buy somebody some livestock or other things to help them prosper.

I think its a really good idea as i've always been put off giving to some charities when you hear that the money isn't getting to those who need it. But this seems better as the money is spent on worthwhile things and not squandered or lost to corruption. Has anyone thought of donating this way this christmas?

  • there have also been adverse things said about these schemes, cos the people who get the animals then have to spend money to look after those animals too...money they dont have.
  • I have read quite a bit lately about the 'goat' schemes, which seem to have backfired. It seems that the farmers who received goats, now have an extra mouth to feed. There is often no grass left for the goats which means they don't produce enough milk - another burden for those poor people. Your money also doesn't necessarily get used for a cow or goat or whatever you said you'd want, but for whatever is most useful in the charities eyes.
I thought it was a good idea (and probably still is) but until it's better organised I stick to donating money.

You don't HAVE to give goats etc - there are all sorts of other items which should not cause the same problems. We were given a public loo last year!!!

the trouble with the story about 'goats eating crops and being more of a problem than a help', is that in most cases, it just isn't true. Sadly newspapers seem to be doing less and less research before printing these days.

I think these schemes are great, a bunch of us clubbed together our monies and raised some more and bought a heap of things ranging from a bog, a well, a fruit tree, some goats, a cow, water tablets etc. I'd insisted on the bog since the start.... :o hehe personal favourite.
