Approved Food Dr Oetker gravy mix

Options
I need help please. Im so cross:mad::mad::mad:
I bought 6.5kg of Dr Oetker gravy mix expecting it to come with instructions like other stuff. There is nothing on the packaging and have spent an hour trying various combinations of mix to water and its just horrid. Googled it - no idea of how to make it although I have got some idea now of what is in it. Really upset too because emailed Approved Foods and they dont have a clue either which in my opinion is wrong so not impressed. It was £5.00 so really dont want to chuck it out.

This is my first time buying from Approved Foods - I dont think I will be doing it again. Any ideas?
I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.

I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over and through me. When it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
When the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.

    Hi,

is it gravy mix like old-fashioned bisto? you know, the kind you need to use with meat juices and such? rather than an instant gravy granules idea?

Its instant gravy of some kind but industrial type strength? I made it up according to Bisto powder 4 x 5ml to half a pint of water and again it was vile - the overwhelming taste was salt but it was a better consistency. Ive been experimenting all afternoon with it. I will phone the manufacturer but its really horrid stuff and Im so cross at myself wasting 5 pounds that i sits very badly with my OS ways. The hilarious thing is Im so bad a guestimating what a KG is that I had no idea how much I had ordered - of that and other stuff too.

Let us know what the manufacturer says Molly. I guess you will learn a big lesson from this. Maybe keep a few weighted things beside you if you order again so you can use the for comparison.

There's usually some sort of catch with what you buy from those sorts of websites. Ie - out of date, horrible product no one wants to use, or just pure junk food

    Presume this is it.

    http://www.oetkerfoodservice.ca/en/product/Savoury-Mixes/Instant-Gravy/Regular/22241

Are you having problems getting it to mix properly or is it just the taste?

We use this similar product in work, don't know if the quantities guide here, scaled down, would be any use? http://www.nestleprofessional.com/australia/en/BrandsAndProducts/Brands/MAGGI_CLASSIC/Pages/MAGGI_Rich_Gravy_Mix_2kg.aspx

If you don't want to throw it away, you could always try it at a lower concentration as a seasoning/stock for stews/casseroles etc

It's so annoying when you get caught out like this, isn't it?

EDIT to add. Just looked again at the Dr Oetker site. That says 6 x 480g packs yields 24 litres of gravy.

That means 480g pack makes 4 litres. So concentration must be around 60g of dry mix to 500ml of water, if my hurried maths is correct!

Molly just remember 1 KG is the size of a bag of sugar. Wow that's a heck of a lot of gravy!!!!

Try using water from cooking veggies or some meaty stock/juice when making it up, also add some pepper and garlic granules.

The gravy mix could also be used for thickening mince, braised steak, etc. as it would pick up flavour from the meat.

Using the mix to make onion gravy is also worth a try.

For information, I've copied and pasted this from AF's terms and conditions... paragraph 2 says you can ask for a refund on any item(s) you're not happy with.

My orders from AF have saved me £££s on brand name products and, to date, all items received have been perfectly okay.

If I'm unsure about a particular item then I don't buy it, same as when shopping anywhere else.

Yes, some items are short dated and some past their best before date, but it's unfair to assume/say that everything they sell is out of date - my last order contained items that have best before dates well into 2012.

From your reference to 'junk food', do we assume that you have never ever eaten a biscuit, packet of crisps, chocolate, ready meal, cup-a-soup or instant gravy, etc?

I'm a careful shopper but have no complaints about AF.
