What do you expect for £600? The low price is probably because its probably a relatively high insurance group/road tax, so next to no buyers for it. Get out there and drive it!

Mazda 323 1.6 on a 2001 plate would struggle to get £600 round here so I would say you have paid too much LMAO. Bear in mind you have paid £600 for a 10 year old car, its an average price really and you can't compare it price wise to a VW polo or ford fiesta. A 98 polo is going to more desirable than a mazda 323 especially with younger drivers so will hold its value a bit better.
