Keeping the dust down!!!

Options
Hi there

I would really like some ideas of how to keep my home as dust free as possible please. For some reason my house has become very very dusty whereas before it wasnt??? Any ideas of what has changed. Two adults, one teenager and 2 jrt live here but that has been the same for years so what else could it be. Im asthmatic and find that dust effects me whereas animals dont.

I would really appreciate any help and tips.

Thanks in advance

  • Wash the walls, ceilings, light fittings, flooring, every last square inch of the house.

    Clean the vacuum cleaner filters.

Consider replacing it for one with a HEPA filter.

Empty the vacuum outside the house.

Damp dust every day, including the tops of doors, banisters, door mouldings, skirting boards.

Replace carpets with hard flooring wherever possible.

Don't have loads of linens - cushion covers, throws, curtains, soft toys, etc.

    Have blinds rather than curtains.

Have leather furniture rather than fabric.

Shampoo dogs frequently/add oil to their food to reduce dander/consider an ionising pet brush/wipe dogs over with a damp towel every day.

Use a steam cleaner and steam the mattresses, cover with anti mite sheet, replace pillows with synthetic ones.

Get up every morning and hang duvet over door before vacuuming, steaming and damp dusting.

Consider using an ionising/air purifying unit.

Put books (if you must keep them) in a bookcase with a door. Dispense with unnecessary clutter/ornaments.

    Hope some of that helps.

wow jojo, thanks for your reply, im going to go back and re-read it now and see if i can started on some of the ideas this afternoon. I have also noticed that because we havent had much rain, it seems more dusty as nothing to damp the dust down. Do you use all of these ideas yourself?

  • Over time, I have - my eldest has been permanently on antihistamines since she was 10, inhalers since 14 and steroids since 16. My youngest is pretty much invincible to everything except tree pollen and dust and I just got used to doing this kind of thing over time. Oh, and my boyfriend has eczema. Allergy city here!

Once the initial cleaning is done, it isn't too hard and you can work out what you can afford to let slide - I only use the ioniser thingummywotsit when someone is particularly bad.

I'm in a brand new house now, and whilst I am going to have carpet on the stairs and in my room (when I can afford it :)), there are just 3 rugs in the place and curtains in two rooms.

I'm not perfect, by any means, but the more I did to try and combat the dust, the fewer symptoms (and fewer sneezes at night).

Oh, and we have 3 cats, so there is a lot of fluff - they get bathed once a year, much to their disgust, and wiped down a lot.

Be prepared for a few ewwww moments when you find places you have overlooked!
