OFGEM still silent on the Scottish Power Lie?

ian1969uk: That's a slightly more sensible option, however if they did that you know that within 2 hours of the announcement all that would be all over papers, forums, websites, etc. would be the maximum figure. That's fairly close to just announcing the maximum for the effect it would have.
Yes I appreciate that, but announcing the average rise had the same issue. This wasn't reported by most of the press as an average, it was announced as a fact that prices were going up by that much.
In fact, if the press did report the maximum, it would at least be more likely to give people a much needed kick up the backside to go to comparison sites and find better alternatives. I'd rather see a headline of the maximum, and then find it was less, than assume it was the average, take no action, and then be hit with large bills.0 -
Anyway, why not? A look up table showing the effects for high, medium and low users for each tariff.
Or would the information be too embarrassing in relation to the average headline number?
It's more for the papers and actually getting it printed. They'd never list all of that in their story, they'd just pick a few (most likely the largest increases) and leave the rest off.
As for what you say about two many tariffs and options, I 100% agree, however, that also isn't the OPs complaint. I'd have been a lot more sympathetic if it was.
Basically, it seems that the main alternatives that are being suggested all basically boil down to announcing the largest increase possible. I'm not actually convinced that it would be any better. I can immagine all the posts complaining about little old ladies never using any energy again and freezing in their homes becuase they've heard how much the cost is going up, when in reality it only went up 15%, and slating the company for causing this.
Also, from the point of view of the company, unless all suppliers are forced to do this, it's a massive, massive shot in the foot. You'd lose customers left right and centre...I am an employee of British Gas, however the views expressed on this post are mine and do not necessarily reflect the views of Centrica, its subsidiaries or affiliated companies.0 -
I offerred you a solution but like the market, it's 'too difficult' too much trouble', 'people will die'.
C'mon you are better than that.At least a website table then . It's almost impossible to navigate to current tariff tables on the various websites. Wonder why?
Or what about, there isn't a radical pricing restructure which affects customers in one category more. e.g. low users. Then the average would be more like the average.
Or less tariffs each year then the catch up differential wouldn't be so wide.
You think of some. Why should I do all the work? I don't even work there.:D0 -
I think you mis-understood me. I was more saying 'people will moan' than 'people will die'. That was an example of the complaints that people are likely to make, post on web forums and write to their MPs and Ofgem about if it's done that way.
And I have no idea what a good way of doing it would be. To be honest, I really don't think there is a way of announcing tariff changes that won't have loads of people complaining, posting on web forums, etc, etc.
This was my entire point all along. The OP has done all of this, written to all of these people and I want to know what his magical solution for what Scottish Power should have done instead is. One that wouldn't alienate, and cause similar complaints from, an entirely different section of their customer base.
It's all fine and well saying the current way is no good. They're right, it's not. I completely agree with that. I also think that complaining about the way that Scottish Power announced the price rise, like the OP has done and the first few replies have agreed with, is a bit like being robbed and then complaining to the police that a man you met on the street swore at you, while forgetting to mention the missing money. It's a waste of time for everyone involved who could be sorting out the actual issues!I am an employee of British Gas, however the views expressed on this post are mine and do not necessarily reflect the views of Centrica, its subsidiaries or affiliated companies.0 -
It's all this confusion that has pushed me to Co-op Energy.
I bet they'd find it easy to make a price change understandable0 -
Some of it is need in order to survive. We live in a civilised society not caveman days we we could simple gather wood/peat to heat our caves. Many of us cant do that now. so we rely on a regulator to be effective in making sure we arent ripped off
Some people now will due to cuts in incomes/inflation have to decide on warmth or food this WinterGas and Elec isn't a right, you aren't entitled to it. If you don't like it, go to another company.
Thank Maggie Thatcher for selling off the assets.0 -
You have no human right to gas and electricity. Some people live without it. You saying that is showing what a narrow-minded, deluded bunch of debt-ridden brats you've all evolved into.
How about you sell your fancy car, your massive TV's, cancel the Sky and Virgin and your inane £80 a month iPhones before trying to take the moral high ground against energy companies.

I'm doing likewise and leaving SP out of sheer principle. I will get £50 discount off first bill from the Co-op and for now (until their prices inevitably rise along with everyone else) save £100 p..a. No exit penalty either so I can switch again when the playing field is hopefully level. If the ball had gone in the net it would have been a goal.If my Auntie had been a man she'd have been my Uncle.0 -
