Moving In...

Options
So, after Christmas I will be moving in to my Grandad's house (he's going into a home) and it looks like Ill need to:
  • Lay laminate in the living room and L shaped hall
  • Paint the living room, bedrooms (2) and hall
  • Lay new carpets in the two bedrooms
  • Buy a new fridge/freezer
  • Buy a new cooker
  • Buy new sofas

You may think some of that is unnecessary, but it is, most of it is years old and in disrepair/not very clean/not to my taste.

I also have a few other things I would like to do, but no doubt will post when the time comes.

I am also a poor student which is why I am posting. Where can I get these things quite cheaply? I'm mostly thinking fridge/freezer and cooker and also sofa (I know of IKEA but haven't heard good things)

Any help is appreciated :)

The local Freecycle website will provide most of your requirements except maybe the laminate and laying it and the carpet.

You told me again you preferred handsome men but for me you would make an exception.

Try ebay for some of those items.

Tesco, Asda etc sometimes sell cheap paint.

Use your Yellow pages and check out a few builders merchants, decorators suppliers etc.

Avoid Homebase, and most DIY stores etc, they are usually more expensive than anyone else. B&Q can be cheap for some things. Wickes are quite good but do shop around.

For painting and other work that you have not done before, read up on it before you start and learn about preparation and priming surfaces etc.

Can you rent out a room to a fellow student to help with the finances?

    Good luck.

The renting out was an idea but I was thinking of asking a mate. I can get people to help with painting etc. Someone also mentioned that Comet has an outlet for returned goods that I'm going to try.

If you ask a mate to move in, surely you would expect him to pay rent and his share of the bills and not stay for free. Maybe give him a good deal on the rent but don't let him freeload on you. If he is hard up trade rent for housework, help with refurbishment etc.

That's not a bad idea, because I know he makes a bit more than I do atm but his contract runs out and I doubt he'll be able to give as much.
