Travel Insurance - UK Citizen working abroad

Hello,
I am currently working on a short term contract in Bangkok, Thailand, which ends in July 2012 and I want to secure travel insurance for a return visit to the UK for my family this summer. We also intend to spend some time holidaying in Turkey en route. I still retain my house, bank accounts, etc. in the UK and we are still registered with the local medical group practice in my home town.
UK based quotes I have state that I must be UK resident and registered with a local doctor which seems to indicate that I am prohibited from their policy. Are there any ways around this or can anyone suggest alternative online sites that I can use to secure a competitive quote?
Regards,
Andy

Most UK based travel insurance policies will stipulate that those covered on the policy must be UK residents.
Can you not get a Thai policy? You are Thai residents, after all.

Wow! Why so expensive - almost 10x the cost of a UK-based policy? The (only) policy quoted offers very comprehensive medical cover for which you end up paying top dollar. Do they not offer different policies with lower levels of cover?

My understanding from talking to Direct-Travel Insurance yesterday was that trips must start and finish in the UK, which would rule you out from standard UK policies if they're all the same. Specifically, I wasn't allowed to start a new policy when the person was abroad at the time, although I was able to extend an annual wordwide policy to cover the full period. Doesn't help you, though, unfortunately.0
