There are different processors within each range, so it's not possible to say. A far better idea would be to link to the two laptops, perhaps provide your budget and what you want a new laptop and then we can advise on a good deal. Particularly if you're "clueless about laptops" you may find that useful.0

What's a triple core processor?
Is it a quad core that didn't pass quality checks?0 -

Thats usually exactly what they are a quad core processor with one core disabled usually due to some issue in the production. There's no sense crying over every mistake.
You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.0 -
Oh - so what do you recommend? Not the triple core?0

So why does the laptop in your second link cost £656? "Being pink" should disqualify it, anyway!summersweets1 wrote: »The two laptops are:

I don't know much about Sony Vaios but that Sainsbury's one looks like a good price. The processor is not the best but its ok. Perhaps Sony Vaiso are over-priced
eg http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/sony-vaio-vpcee3z0e-bq-triple-core-cpu-6gb-ram-500gb-15-blu-ray-laptop-just-499/950905
I guess the question is can you get a similar spec with a decent processor for £500?
1. http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/Sony_VAIO_EB3J0E_1071410.html No Blu-ray and a smaller disk but better processor (and its still a Sony Vaio)
2. http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/Samsung_R730_1087832.html No Blu-ray but great processor and 17" screen! Add a 3 year warranty (always a good idea with any laptop) for £50 and I'd go for this
http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/Samsung_3_Year_Collect__Return_Warranty_122323.html
I guess the question is how important is Blu-ray to you? Do you need to play modern 3D action games?
EDIT:
3. This one is a direct comparison with the Sainsburys Sony Vaio. It has Blu-ray and the best processor yet. No cheap warranty extension (I haven't looked very hard).

the 2nd link I could get cheaper else where but the website didnt have as much info as the amazon link.
I have ordered the sony i3 laptop
I wasn't too fussed about the blue ray player.
Thanks for your help
im useless when it comes to knowing about processors  0 -
CPUs can be confusing, the way I see it there are 4 parts of a CPU to consider (simplistic view, of course):
- Number of cores (more = better) allows more paralellism therefore stuff get done quicker
- Speed of cores (higher = better) the speed stuff get done
- Front side bus speed (faster = better) the speed the CPU can read/wriet to the outside world
- Size of cache (bigger = better) the amount of storage between the outside world and the CPU0
