I don't seem to have any other option than trying to replace the panel.

Just because the shop hasn't mentioned any other options doesn't mean that you don't have any.
Legally if any goods are not as described, damaged, or with bits missing, you are entitled to reject them within a reasonable time.
This time isn't stated in the SOGA, but if must be long enough to enable you to make sure that the goods conform to contract.

If they fail to do so, you are entitled to reject them and ask for a full refund or replacment, and you do not have to return the faulty goods, simply make them available for the retailer to collect.

34 Buyer’s right of examining the goods.

    F33. . .
Unless otherwise agreed, when the seller tenders delivery of goods to the buyer, he is bound on request to afford the buyer a reasonable opportunity of examining the goods for the purpose of ascertaining whether they are in conformity with the contract [F34and, in the case of a contract for sale by sample, of comparing the bulk with the sample.].

36 Buyer not bound to return rejected goods.

Unless otherwise agreed, where goods are delivered to the buyer, and he refuses to accept them, having the right to do so, he is not bound to return them to the seller, but it is sufficient if he intimates to the seller that he refuses to accept them.

Personally, this is what I would do.
You might replace the side panel and find it's okay, then in a few months the dowels or glued bits might come loose.
