Condensation in gas oven

Hi Folks,

I wondered if any of you can offer some advice please? We have moved into a rented house a couple of weeks ago and I am a bit worried about the gas cooker. It is a very basic Jet brand oven and is not much cop tbh, but I have never used a gas oven before so though ok I'll get used to it. It was pretty manky when we moved in but I have cleaned it up quite a bit so doesn't look so bad now. The problem is that when I cook using the oven, condensation forms on the oven door, the water then builds up to the point where it runs out of the bottom of the door and makes a manky puddle on the floor. The property should have been gas checked when we moved in but as yet no one can find the cert. They are going to send someone around next week to check everything, but in the meantime should I be using the oven is it safe?

It has been some years since I had a gas oven, but IIRC the combustion of the gas produces water vapour as a by-product so that a certain amount of condensation is not unusual. I've heard people describe gas ovens as producing "wet heat" compared to electric. It does sound like you have a lot of condensation though, so you might need to get it checked out.

Sorry, not the most helpful reply!

As has been said, when you burn gas you get water loads of water vapour given off. I suspect that the door isn't sealing properly at the bottom but it won't do you any harm. If you look down the back by the burner there is usually a dirty great hole for the air to get in so and probably another smaller vent at the top at the back so they are not meant to be air tight. In fact, they wouldn't work if they were.

Maybe a new door seal would be the answer.
