    1. Always read the contract you sign up to very carefully; by default the advertising highlights the advantage but completely forgets the downsides as much as legally possible.
    2. Why would a company want you to sign up for a 12 month deal when consumer legislation says you are entitled to a 30 day rolling contact? The answer would seem obvious.
    3. Check with the ASA (advertising standards agency) which gas company has been found guilty of more forbidden and/or misleading advertising than any other gas company. I would not want to sign up with them.

    1. Read the contract. Definitely. It's about the only part of this post I agree with. What Websaver covers is pretty blatantly up in the tariff info on the website. Plus there has never been any suggestion in the advertising that the price won't change. I don't particularly see how advertising strategies are relevant to the OPs question.

    2. And you are perfectly entitled to stay on a 30 day rolling contract if you want. They're not forcing you to sign up in breach of the legislation. It's an option that you can choose to take. Once more, I fail to see the relevance.

    3. As far as I can tell from the last 5 years of cases on the ASA site: nPower and British Gas jointly with 9 each. It's interesting to know but not really relevant to whether the price on a non-fixed price tariff can be increased either.

Every supplier runs these, so are you suggesting that BG doing it is terrible because they've had 9 complaints over 5 years and Scottish and Southern are fine to do it because they've only had 6?

All I've really been able to pick up from your post is that you quite severely don't like British Gas. That's fine, but disliking in a way that's relevant to the question would be nice...
I am an employee of British Gas, however the views expressed on this post are mine and do not necessarily reflect the views of Centrica, its subsidiaries or affiliated companies.
