A cordless phone would be more convenient and probably wouldn't cost much more!

  • If there are plenty phone sockets why not get her a couple of cordless phones? They can be inexpensive now if you shop around and will make it quicker and easier answering the phone instead of having to get to the 'fixed' line all the time.

  • you don't need sockets for cordless phones (well if there are more than 1) you have 1 main base unit plugged into the phone and then can have satellite phones wherever you want.

Best to have a "normal" phone plugged in somewhere, most (if not all) cordless phones won't work in a power cut.
  • thats another great idea thanks everyone!

you can buy ringers that plug into a phone socket in the pound shop!
  • How about just buying an extension cable and moving her phone to a more central location.

I'm assuming the phone socket is in an "akward" place and she can't hear the the phone ring when she is in certain parts of the house.

Yes, and you can also get ringers with a small flashing light that is very useful for those with poor hearing.

I have seen them in stores such as Woolworths, Wilko, Robert Dyas etc for about £10 or so.

Bear in mind the REN total of your system. Google “telephone” “REN” if you don’t understand but REN refers to a limit on the maximum number of devices (phone, ringer, fax etc) that can be connected to a phone line simultaneously. The maximum is usually 4 and devices are usually 1 each so you can have a total of 4 devices but this can vary.
