Can I have your opinion on what to do?

I am trying to run a business selling handmade items on ebay. Someone asked me if I would make an item to their own specifics. I said yes and made an item based on what the potential buyer had asked for. I sent photos but potential buyer said they didn't like it and asked for something else. I made another item. They didn't like that either and said to leave it. They said they would pay for work up to date so I am not out of pocket. One of the two designs, I think I might be able to adapt it to be something I can sell on. But one of them, being specific to what the person asked for, I couldn't sell it on. The materials I used to make the item, could've been used to make something that I could've sold to buyer thus making a profit.

I have spent days making these items and shopping around for materials that the person asked for. I am in a scary financial period (I am looking for a job as being self employed is not supporting me) so I feel I should charge this person for something.

Do I charge the person for the materials used or the full price of the item or nothing at all?
