replacing laminate with carpet

I have an open plan lounge that has laminate flooring, I find laminate cold and a pain to keep looking nice.
I would like to replace it with a carpet and wondered would I have to lift it first or could carpet be laid over the top?
I am wondering what will happen with the scurtain(sp) boards as the laminate was laid and they were replaced so that no beading was needed around the edges. would i have to replace all the scurtain boards or will a carpet and underlay be the same thickness
thanks

Ifvthey have used the 6mm felt underlay and your laminate is say 8mm, thats a 14mm gapwhich a thick underlay and good quality carpet should accommodate no trouble. If you use a thinner carpet and chaper underlay, then you may still see a gap. If its a thin underlay under your laminate, then its a bonus.

Laminate is a "floating floor" - you might find that the carpet gripper if nailed through the laminate to any floorboards will restrict expansion. This could cause the laminate to raise.
Also door clearance would need to be sorted if you put carpet on top.
I agree with phill99 that the chances are that underlay+carpet will probably fit nicely.Forgotten but not gone.0 -
I am in the same situation, I hate laminate for the same reasons, cold and aweful looking if you don't sweep every few minutes.
I have been casually looking at carpet over the last few months, and the sales assistants all say that carpet can be laid directly ontop of the laminate, although I myself have a gut instinct that tells me to pull the laminate up first, seeing as if you never had laminate, it wouldn't be there... if you see what I mean?!0
