p11d business travel taxable?

any help much appreciated. work for a 4 person consultancy firm. have just received my p11d - it looks like a pdf of pages submitted online. It lists travelling and subsistence payments, payments for use of home telephone and other expenses, all with payments listed as 'total taxable payment'.

the grand total categorised on this form as 'total taxable payment' is £1706.36. These expenses were for work related travel - staying in a hotel whilst delivery a client training programme, going to London by train for a conference etc. all necessary. I have spent this money & been paid via bank transfer but not through my payslip. These expenses were unavoidable.

I have emailed my boss to ask whether she really feels this is taxable. she conveniently sent the document just as she went on holiday for 4 days.

As you can imagine i am very worried i am indeed going to have to pay tax on this. Any thoughts on whether this is taxabale and what i can do about it if she has submitted this incorrectly to hmrc?

We are having IVF at the moment as my boss knows and money is very tight.

As a starting point, I'd suggest you look round the HMRC site for information on P11Ds, taxable expenses etc, because there is nothing like knowing for yourself how these things work if you suspect your company has made a mistake.

I am not sure: I've always managed to argue that we are not paying anything which IS taxable, so we do a NIL return or sign a declaration that nothing is taxable, so I don't know whether it's all taxable if any of it is, IYSWIM.

Also I don't know if the tax (if due) is collected via your tax code, or direct by HMRC.

Generally if the expenses were wholly and exclusively and necessary for business they would not be a benefit to the employee. A section 336 claim should have been completed to avoid any liability!

P11d's are not due until 6th July so there is time to ammend them. Any tax due would be put through your tax code by reducing the free allowance.

I'm guessing the employer, who as you say is small only employing 4 people, has not contacted HMRC to get a dispensation in place for anything.

Therefore they have probably done the correct thing. What you neeed to do is claim for these items on your annual tax return - if you don't get a return, ask for one :)
