Bad Workmanship

Having our garden landscaped by a local company who seemed on the face it very good.

Gave them an idea of what we wanted and hoped they would put that into action as they do it for a living.

Aspects of the work are good and other parts discovered this evening are not.

One part I was not happy with at the time, but was expecting it to improve once I returned today.

We have paid 60% of the money and there is still work to complete.

Sack them off the job or let them try and put it right?

Don't sack them (yet). Once they have finished draw up a snagging list and go through it with them and ask them to put it right. Bare in mind you have the trump card as you still have some of their money so don't pay them that until they have put right your concerns.

You need to give them a chance to put things right before you get heavy handed.

Concern with that is if I have the confidence they'll do the work right 2nd time round.

Did you provide sketches? Did they? Any written agreement on what materials would be used?

But you have the trump card - their money. They will put it right or you don't pay them.

Also remember, that if you kick them off site now and try and get someone else in it will probably cost you more as trafesman always charge a premium to take over other people work after there has been a dispute between the contractor and the client.

i would speak to them straight away , rather than wait until they have finished , if they are a decent company they wil want you to be happy with their work
