This is a new computer, has (it says) 4GB memory, intel (R)core i3 CPU, and 64bit operating system. But it is not as good as my old laptop at watching TV Catchup or Youtube clips. Why? and is there anything I can do to improve it?

any change in your wireless setup since the new machine ? that would be a mitigating factor too. also, sometimes, out of the box even, wireless drivers need to be updated -- this can make a huge difference sometimes.

I had a carry on to get the wirteless to work with it at all - had to sit the computer right beside the router to get a decent signal at all. I will ask my SIL how to update the driver, thanks :)

Lappy or desktop? Try plugging it in to the router with a network cable, you should find everything runs a treat (in which case it's a problem with the wireless) or still struggles (in which case we know the problem lies elsewhere).

Sounds like a network problem rather than a computer problem.

I'd plug it directly into the router and see of that makes any difference.

Also I'd go to a site like iplayer and download a programme then compare the streaming version of the programme to the downloaded version.
  • I notice you specifically mentioned Youtube and TV Catchup. It could be that Adobe Flash needs updating or reinstalling.

Yes, these are the only two sites I ever use for watching clips, I will connect the router then update Adobe, many thanks for that.
