alternatives to carpet in lounge/hallway?

Options
I have a terrible lounge carpet that needs replacing. It's a top flat in a converted house, so noise is an issue for the neighbours. At present, it has a basic soundproofing chipboard laid throughout which works ok. It is not entirely soundproof (and we have noise that comes through walls) but no complaints.

The carpet dates from 2000 and can't be matched up any longer (one of those innumerable shades of beige that are never quite the same again). It is wool. We have had a moth problem so parts of it have holes. We have treated the moths 5x but they are impossible to entirely eliminate - they were gone all winter but a few are now back. I have seen them in the common areas, so the pest controller thinks that someone else's flat has them, which is causing a problem for us. The problem is that this is not an insurable risk, so if we raise it as an issue, the neighbours will start on about how we should pay for them to have a new carpet as our flat has caused the problem..so we keep quiet about it (as do they). We treat the carpet on a 6 monthly basis with chemicals and we lay down sticky pheromone strips (which typically each catch 4 moths in a month, so it's a steady but minor problem).

We are reluctant to lay new wool based carpet because of the moths, colour matching and allergies.
Ideally we'd like engineered wood over some form of acoustic soundproofing as it would also hugely improve how the flat looks, but wondered how much noisier this would be - don't want to pay for engineered wood and soundproofing only to have to go back to carpet. Our kitchen area (small: 1.5m x 4m at most) has oak flooring with the chipboard 'soundproofing' underneath and no complaints have been raised about noise, but we need to do the lounge and hallway passage in new flooring.

We are hoping to leave the bedrooms carpeted despite the odd hole from our winged enemies, as can't afford to replace the carpets. We do walk around in house socks, no high heels or clacking boots so it's footfall noise and TV, music etc although we do try to be as considerate as possible.

Does anyone have any advice on what may be possible or how to get proper advice from an acoustic expert without paying a fortune, only to be told to stick with carpet?

And does anyone know what the moth diffuser is called and how to get hold of one (or more) - the kind the carpet cos use in their warehouses to stop moths? Not sure how safe these are?
